What’s the Secret to Crushing Your Goals? March 4, 2025 by Sue KarpinskiThe start of the new year is when so many of us set new health goals—whether it’s to eat better, exercise more, or simply feel stronger and healthier. Or we wait until spring when the thought of summer vacations, swimsuits, and weddings nudges us to change our health for good. But let me tell you something I’ve learned: No matter how great your plan is, your mindset will make or break it. Why Mindset Matters More Than Your Plan Your mindset is with you every second of every day. It shapes the choices you make, the beliefs you hold, and how you respond to challenges. The best meal plan won’t work if you believe you “always fail at diets.” The perfect workout routine won’t matter if you tell yourself, “I’m not an active person.” Your mindset is influenced by your past experiences, the people around you, and even the messages you consume daily. If you’ve struggled in the past, your brain naturally tries to protect you by reinforcing limiting beliefs like, “I always fail” or “This won’t work for me.” But here’s the truth—your brain is adaptable. The science of neuroplasticity shows that our thoughts and habits can be rewired. Mindset Isn’t Fixed—It’s a Muscle You Can Train Many people assume their thoughts and beliefs are permanent, but they’re not. Just like your body adapts to new workouts, your brain adapts to new ways of thinking. When you consciously shift your mindset, you strengthen new neural pathways that make positive change easier over time. The key is consistency—just like building strength in the gym, you have to train your mind daily to think in a way that serves your goals. The Stories We Tell Ourselves I’ll share a story with you. For years, I told myself I wasn’t a runner. A trainer once told me I didn’t have “what it takes,” and I believed it. So, I didn’t try. I avoided running altogether because I let that belief define me. Then one day, I started going to races with friends and saw runners of all shapes, sizes, and abilities crossing the finish line. It hit me…the story I’d been telling myself wasn’t true. I decided to rewrite it. I started running, little by little, and before long, I became the runner I never thought I could be. There’s a quote by Buddha that always sticks with me: The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” What Are You Telling Yourself? So, let me ask you… What stories are you telling yourself right now? Are they helping you move toward your goals, or holding you back? If you believe that healthy eating is too hard, it will feel that way. If you think you’ll never lose weight because “nothing works for me,” then nothing will. But if you shift your mindset, everything else starts to fall into place. Eating healthier feels less like a chore and more like self-care. Challenges turn into opportunities. Exercise becomes a gift instead of a punishment. You see the world—and yourself—through a whole new lens. The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything What if, instead of seeing obstacles, you saw opportunities? What if, instead of fearing failure, you viewed setbacks as part of the process? Here are some strategies to shift your mindset: Reframe setbacks as learning experiences. Instead of thinking, “I failed again,” shift to “What can I learn from this?” Visualize success daily. Spend five minutes each morning picturing yourself achieving your goal—your brain will begin to believe it’s possible. Change your language. Swap phrases like “I can’t” for “I’m learning” or “This is hard” for “This is a challenge I can overcome.” Surround yourself with the right people. Spend time with those who inspire and uplift you—mindset is contagious! Celebrate small wins. Acknowledge every step forward, no matter how small, to build positive reinforcement in your brain. You truly CAN accomplish anything you set your mind to. This is the kind of mindset shift I help my clients cultivate inside my Metabolic and Lifestyle Reset program.
